Exchanging a foreign driving license

How to change your driving license?

Moving to Switzerland requires you to have a Swiss driving license. In accordance with legal provisions in this area, you have up to 12 months following your arrival to modify your permit.

Two scenarios are possible:

(1) The country which issued your license is a signatory to a recognition convention with Switzerland: in this case, you are simply asked to make the request to the Automobile and Navigation Service which will issue you your Swiss license .

(2) The country which issued your license is not a signatory to a recognition convention with Switzerland: in this case, the request to change your license will be accompanied by a compulsory inspection trip.

It is strongly recommended that you prepare well for this test to pass it well because no other additional exam is possible in the event of failure. This will automatically result in a withdrawal of your foreign license or a ban on its use. You will therefore be invited to start the Swiss permit granting procedure from scratch.

You will find all the useful information in our “useful links” section.

Always a valuable update

Continuing training for safer driving

Updating your driving knowledge has become inevitable today for the following main reasons:

– increase in road traffic and its density;

– regular updates of legislation;

– technological evolution of vehicles;

– integration of new accessories in vehicles (GPS, mobile phones)

– evolution of driving styles.

For all these reasons, we recommend that all drivers, both experts and beginners (new drivers), for short journeys as well as long distances, refresh their knowledge.

Through our continuing education courses, our goal is to give you “booster shots” to give you the confidence and ease to drive safely.
